Chiefs agree to trade Alex Smith to the Redskins

After the 2017 season, the writing appeared on the wall for Alex Smith and his future with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes, the son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Pat Mahomes and the 2016 Sammy Baugh Award victor as the nation’s top college football passer, has been considered the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback of the future since he was tabbed as their first-round pick (No. 10 overall) in the 2017 NFL draft. The team’s cheapest option to keep him for 2018 (aside from agreeing to a long term deal which was slowly becoming a non-option), would have been a $28.8 million franchise tag for 2018. The 22-year-old has one start under his belt, a 27-24 win over the Broncos in Week 17 in which he completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards and one interception. “Someone who I owe a lot of my success to, and a guy that’s been a class act through all the ups n downs”.

With pending free agent Jimmy Garoppolo assured to get retained by the 49ers, Cousins would become the hottest commodity on the free-agent market with a number of quarterback-needy teams expected to be interested.

“Nothing really surprises me anymore”, Washington tight end Niles Paul tweeted. Former Redskins QB Robert Griffin III tweeted: “Some how…” I still can’t believe they did that. It was time for Kansas City to move on and see what they have in Mahomes, who’s known for having exceptional arm talent and playmaking ability – as he showed in Week 17 – that the Chiefs hope can take their highly talented roster to the next level. After initially saying he hadn’t given it much thought, Smith eventually relented, admitting that given the past two seasons, Cleveland isn’t all that attractive at the moment. The 6-foot 3 inch, 230-pound quarterback totaled 5,052 passing yards with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on a 65.7 percent completion rate in 2016. However, he won just one playoff game in five years posting a 1-4 record in the postseason.

The Redskins seem intent on letting Cousins go, and the word now is that they’re going to try to do it with a transition tag that would at least give the team a chance to get something in return through a trade, either a high draft pick, a player or a combination of the two.

The Redskins also hold the 13th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Kansas City Star first reported the deal.
