Chiefs’ Berry cleared to return after lymphoma treatments

Taking a huge step in a rapid and dramatic comeback, safety Eric Berry has been cleared medically to practice with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday, about eight months after being diagnosed with lymphoma.

The team announced in a news release Tuesday night that Berry has been cleared to practice on Wednesday with the quarterbacks, rookies and injured players. Berry immediately began undergoing chemotherapy treatments to eliminate the disease, and recently finished in June.

The Chiefs put Berry through “several rounds of thorough testing”, which concluded Tuesday evening.

Berry, the fifth overall draft pick in 2010 out of Tennessee, has been to three Pro Bowls in five seasons.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid and head trainer Rick Burkholder will address the media following Wednesday’s practice.

Family members and team officials remained optimistic throughout the entire process, and insisted that doctors would have the final say in Berry’s potential return to the NFL.

Reid said Berry, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma late last season, was having tests done in St. Joseph.

That Berry is free to take even one snap with the Chiefs so soon after his frightening diagnosis has to be uplifting. Veterans are due to report to training camp Friday, and the first full-squad workout is Saturday. “But like I said, he’s got to go through all the formalities here”.

In his six games last season, he recorded 37 tackles and defended two passes.
