Child’s body found in search for missing seven-year-old

South Yorkshire Police said formal identification of the child’s body was yet to take place, but it was believed to be Conley Thompson.

They added: “The investigation continues into the cause of Conley’s death and we are working with the Health and Safety Executive as part of that investigation”.

Mr Bolton said: “We are not friends with the family, but it’s tragic what’s happened and it just makes you appreciate what you have”.

A book of condolence has been opened at St Thomas and St James on Bank End Road.

Anyone who believes they may have seen the schoolboy is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 1148 of 26 July. He left the park at 8pm but never returned to his home in Underwood Avenue, Worsbrough, a two-mile walk from the park.

Det Chief Inspector Dave Stopford said the construction site had been checked overnight but officers had been unable to gain access as it was “securely locked”.

Visiting the scene grandmother Deborah Fraser said she was “shell-shocked” by his death.

“We know that he’s got through a small hole in top of the construction site, and because it’s been wet he’s slid down and gone into a vertical pipe”, Mrs Fraser said.

A body has been found at a building site close to his home.

Police said Conley’s death is being treated as “a tragic accident”.

“It Truly Is stunned everyone and everybody is in portions and fortuitously, within an area similar to this, everyone comes collectively and eachother is all helped by us”.

People have been laying flowers and teddy bears next to the building site.

“When we were there we had reported the perimeter was not secure, there were children trying to come on to the site and were stopping them”.

“I just remember him as a really happy lad”.

Seven-year-old Evan Dunning was friends with Conley and was in the year above him at school.

A friend of Conley’s, no doubt heartbroken, mother Paula has also spoken of her sadness at hearing a body had been found.

A strong police presence remained on the street where the seven-year-old lives, with two officers flanking the door of the semi-detached house where he is believed to have lived with his mother.
