Child told Paterno of sex abuse by Sandusky, report

One of Penn State’s insurers claimed “in 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSU’s Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky”.

Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Gary Glazer ruled Wednesday that Penn State may not receive insurance coverage for much of those damages.

It seems that there’s more bad news to come out for Penn State regarding Jerry Sandusky, and the Joe Paterno regime in which Sandusky was essentially Paterno’s right hand man. Took very long for this news to leak out, as PSU sanctions from the NCAA have already come and gone. The filing also cites incidents of other assistant football coaches witnessing “inappropriate contact between Sandusky and unidentified children”.

Paterno’s family vehemently disputed the claims reported Thursday.

He did however receive a settlement from Penn State, acknowledging that he was in fact a victim of Sandusky, although the settlement did not acknowledge that he was ignored by Paterno. The allegations, made in depositions by alleged victims, remain under seal, according to Pennlive.com.

In a CNN report released Friday, a man who said he was a troubled young kid in 1971 was raped in a Penn State bathroom by Sandusky. Paterno, who died in 2012, was never charged with a crime. It is in this context that the latest claim should be viewed. How far back in time all the acts occurred has not been made public.

Penn State has paid out around 30 civil settlements to victims as part of the abuse, and a Penn State spokesman would not say whether the 1976 incident was one of those settlements, according to PennLive.

Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of abusing 10 boys as early as the 1990s.

The victim says he informed Penn State authorities – who accused him of making the story up and threatened to go to the authorities themselves – one of whom, he says, was undoubtedly Paterno.

The insurance company says a boy told longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in 1976 that he’d been molested by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The source of the 1976 allegations was not disclosed in Glazers ruling. When asked for comment by CNN previous year, the lawyers said “The suggestion that Joe Paterno participated in the call described is in direct conflict with the facts as we know them and contrary to the way he lived his life”.

“I highly doubt the veracity of the allegation”, Lubrano said. “Believe me, Im the last person to defend the guy, but I am the first person to believe in our justice system. “And I think you need more than anecdotal evidence or speculative evidence”. Sandusky is seeking a new trial.

In the wake of the Sandusky scandal, the NCAA in recent years has actively tried to distance its own and its member schools’ involvement in investigating claims of sexual abuse on college campuses.
