Huntsman and Curiel were arrested, and Plumas investigators later informed Redding police that there could be two children in a storage space in their jurisdiction. After her discovery, according to NBC News, she underwent five hours of surgery Sunday at UC-Davis Medical Center.

SALINAS Law enforcement authorities continued to search an apartment in Salinas on Tuesday, investigating the case of two former residents who are suspected in the deaths of two children whose bodies were found in a Redding storage unit.

As a result of the welfare check, deputies arrested Huntsman and the 17-year-old after the injured 9-year-old was found in a locked vehicle. “When you see what has been done to a handsome little 9-year-old girl.” the sheriff said before stopping to regain his composure.

According to Redding police, the woman and the teenager traveled to several cities in Northern California between November 27 and December 11 and that they stayed at a motel in the Yolo County town of Dunningan on November 28.

The identities of the children, who were siblings, were not released.

The case is being investigated by the Redding Police Department with assistance from the Salinas Police Department and Plumas County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities found the starving 9-year-old at the Quincy Home, Plumas County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday.

Patrol officers responded immediately to the location, found the storage unit and, because lives were at stake, busted the lock on the door, Brindley said.

Huntsman has previously been charged with felony burglary, grant theft, possession of a controlled substance as well as child abuse and child endangerment.

The investigation then led authorities about 140 miles northwest, to the Redding storage facility where they found the bodies.

Tami Huntsman, 39, and Gonzalo Curiel, 17, did not enter pleas and through their attorneys asked for the hearing to be delayed until next month.

Huntsman and Curiel, who KSBW called a couple, had recently moved to a friend’s house in Quincy from their earlier home in Salinas, a third town about 300 miles southwest. Each remained jailed on $1 million bail. No other details were released.

Redding, with a population of about 90,000, is about 200 miles north of San Francisco. They did not say whether they found anything.
