Children join the festivities at London’s Notting Hill Carnival family day

The annual carnival in west London is celebrating its 50th anniversary and huge crowds have turned out despite the miserable weather.

Sunday is traditionally the more family-orientated day of the two-day carnival, and hundreds of young performers got involved in the street performances, as well as dancing to the various music on offer throughout the area.

The Notting Hill Carnival is taking place this bank holiday weekend and is expected to attract more than one million people to the event.

Free food tasting, stacks of Red Stripe and Carib, potted palms and lashings of hot pepper sauce – Tesco is making a big deal about Notting Hill Carnival. These officers will seek out anyone who has bail conditions which prohibit them from attending the event, as well as quickly identifying offenders committing crime. The database has been populated with images of individuals who are forbidden from attending Carnival, as well as individuals wanted by police who it is believed may attend Carnival to commit offences.

Police officers with special skills for recognising the faces of offenders will be monitoring Notting Hill Carnival in a crackdown on crime.

The scene of much boisterous frolicking and endless selfie opportunities, Carnival also has a nasty side.

Three motor vehicles and £30,000 were also seized.

“The Met has worked hard to ensure that Carnival is a safe and enjoyable weekend for everyone who attends and I would ask all carnival-goers to enjoy this family event and make sure that you follow officers” and stewards’ instructions’.

The rain threatened to spoil the parade as it began late, while visitors took whatever shelter they could as they lined the streets.
