Chilean authorities find Zika mosquito for first time in decades

The state of Virginia was granted the ability to perform tests on blood samples for the Zika virus yesterday, following an announcement that the commonwealth’s Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services received permission to commence tests on suspected blood samples by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this month.

A health seminar on the Zika virus and how it affects pregnant women and women of childbearing age is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, at the North Bergen Public Library, 8411 Bergenline Ave., North Bergen.

There have been no reported cases in mainland Chile of mosquitoes infecting people with the Zika virus.

“We also continue to encourage women and their partners in areas with active Zika transmission to engage in pregnancy planning and counseling with their health care providers so that they know the risks and the ways to mitigate them”, the CDC said. On Feb. 1, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Zika virus a public health emergency of worldwide concern. When used as directed, these are safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

The Inquisitr reported on the controversial proposal to release GMO mosquitos to combat the Zika virus. About 80% of people who contract the virus see no symptoms at all. The two pregnant women are being monitored regularly by their family doctors and are being checked by experts at the B.C. Women’s Hospital in Vancouver. (In reality, 19 species of Aedes mosquitoes can transmit Zika, although Aedes aegyptiremains the most common vector.) It’s a mosquito that’s found in tropical and subtropical areas around the world, as well as a few temperate zones.

The symptoms – fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes, muscle pain and headache – are usually mild for most people and the virus may not have any symptoms at all for others. “Today we are re-issuing our advisory to pregnant women not to travel down to the Central and South American countries where the virus is rampant, and want to make the broader Houston community aware the virus can be transmitted sexually”. There have been at least four confirmed cases of Louisiana residents who were diagnosed with the illness after traveling overseas. Microcephaly is a rare but irreversible condition where babies are born with small heads and damaged brains. The CDC says to wear long-sleeve shirts and trousers when working outside to avoid bites, but that’s not always realistic, especially when the temperatures really heat up come summertime.

“I have been amazed with the amount of information that has been generated about Zika virus in such a short amount of time”, says Caine.
