China: 21 dead in coal mine fire in Heilongjiang district

Rescue workers had found the bodies of 21 miners and have today beeen searching for the remaining person missing.

Authorities allege a late-night fire at a coal mine has killed 21 people & left one missing within the northeastern Chinese language province of Heilongjiang.

It was reported that 38 people were working at the shaft’s bottom when the fire broke out on Friday night.

Sixteen people were pulled to safety following the blaze, which was caused after an angle belt caught fire, according to reports.

China is the world’s largest producer of coal. The count is lower compared to the number of deaths in the previous years largely because more safety measures have been implemented to reduce casualties in mining accidents.

Last year, 931 people were killed in mine accidents throughout China, drastically down from the year 2002, when almost 7,000 miners were killed.
