One of the concerns in China’s economy is the delay in structural reforms, best exemplified by the overproduction of steel, among other products.

As the world’s two largest economies, it is natural for China and the U.S. to have differences.

“To be fair, China is working on this issue”, said Sean Miner, manager of the China Program at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The session on North Korean sanctions that took place on June 7 reportedly involved working-level discussion between Chinese and U.S. officials equivalent in rank to deputy assistant minister. To prop up its own economy, China is keeping open dozens of industrial plants that pump out raw materials like steel and aluminum, stuff the world already has enough of.

Frisbie, the USCBC president, called on the United States to use “internationally-accepted, legally-sound” trade tools to address distortions in the US market caused by overcapacity problems.

For the first time, China has committed to giving the United States an investment quota of 250 billion yuan, or 38 billion U.S. dollars.

Lew praised China for promising to open its financial sector wider to USA companies.

During the dialogue however, the U.S. and China agreed to speed up negotiations on a bilateral investment treaty. Kerry, meanwhile, said the countries’ relationship was “absolutely vital”. On Tuesday, just as the meetings were wrapping up, the European Chamber of Commerce in China released its annual business survey.

Hosting next year’s summit offers a great opportunity for mayors from the U.S. and China to shared and develop ideas and solutions while ensuring that these cities contribute to the global effort to curb the effects, and tackle the threats brought about by climate change. It has built artificial islands suitable for military use. The SCS, the worldwide trade artery though which goods worth 5 trillion dollars pass each year, has become a hotbed of contested territorial claims between China and several regional littoral states, including Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. China has also called for a resumption of the stalled six-party talks and a peace treaty between the USA and North Korea. Despite ups and downs in bilateral ties, the two countries have tried to seek common ground through such dialogues and promoted the establishment of a new model of major power relations.

On the environment, envoys from both sides pledged to ensure the Paris agreement is ratified and to persuade other governments to put it into action.

Kerry described climate cooperation as “one of the strongest pillars of our relationship”. He expressed hope that the same spirit of compromise could be infused into disagreements over maritime security and human rights.

“This S&ED will surely have been instrumental in paving the ground for any big announcements made when President Xi and President Obama meet later in the year and also for helping avoid large confrontation over “manageable issues” like steel”, he said.
