China announces $60b ‘funding support’ for Africa

Xi will “announce a series of new measures…to support Africa’s development”, said Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

On infrastructure, President Xi said his Government will step up mutual beneficial cooperation with Africa in infrastructure planning, designing, construction, operation and maintenance.

On Friday, Xi announced a $60 billion aid package for Africa, at the opening of Focac in Johannesburg.

He added: “The strategic partnership between Africa and China is vital to achieve development goals”.

“Buhari identified with the laudable objectives of FOCAC in cultivating, fostering and deepening political, economic, technological, social and other forms of relations between China and Africa”. And is it a fair partnership?

At the last summit in Beijing, China pledged to provide a $20 billion credit line to African countries for development projects and boosted the China Africa development fund by $5 billion, as it has this year.

Bimha said President Xi’s 10-point proposal for promoting China-Africa relations showed that “China wants to be a true friend of Africa, and we should see more and more cooperation”.

He said China was committed to the principles of win-win situation that would promote growth and development of both parties. We need to realise that we can be where China is today because we know where it is coming from as a once poor country.

Mr Xi said this was his seventh visit to Africa and his second as Chinese president and on each trip he saw progress and change. “We say, may God bless China and its people”, said President Mugabe.

The Chinese leader made the announcement during the China-Africa major summit held in Johannesburg, where multi-billion mega deals were inked by the two countries.

Zuma said that FOCAC was formed in 2000 few years after the collapse of apartheid regime in South Africa.

South Africa has been the recipient of the largest share of Chinese investment in Africa, seeing US$9.17 billion over the past decade.

“It’s clear from China’s experience that it is indeed possible to modernise and develop rapidly”, said Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, chairwoman of the African Union commission and a potential successor to South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma, her ex-husband.

President Xi Jinping said the bundle would contain zero-interest loans in addition to scholarships and training for a large number of Africans.

China is ready to provide assistance to Africa in addressing its bottleneck problems of backwardness of infrastructure and shortage of talents, he noted.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said Xi’s aid package was “pressing all the buttons which Africa wants pressed”.
