China bans release of ‘Ghostbusters’ over too many ghosts

What we get is a amusing remake and tribute to one of the all-time great film comedies.

Enjoyable as it is, the film has the feeling of a trial run, avoiding unnecessary risks and doing its best not to disappoint audiences with fixed ideas of what Ghostbusters should be. They are so much of our childhoods growing up.

I’m here to tell you, I’ve seen this movie, and bustin’ still makes me feel good. It’s refreshing to see McCarthy tone it down and be more easily likable than she is in her typically R-rated starring vehicles, and though Abby and Erin’s long-running friendship isn’t developed much past their early reconciliation, it gives the movie something of a heart.

Ghostbusters is basically a rehash of the original film.

So it’s here. One of the most reviled films of the decade before it was even released; the Ghostbusters reboot has a tough job persuading fans of the original films and newcomers alike that it’s worth their time.

“It’s been confirmed that Ghostbusters won’t be coming to China, because they think it’s not really that attractive to Chinese audiences”, the executice said.

Bridesmaids’ director Paul Feig is at the helm directing two of his favorite stars, and he teams with The Heat writer Katie Dippold on the script. It’s based on the original premise penned by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis in 1984. He puts together a group that, as individuals stand on their own with individual voices, different points of view. Kate and Leslie are on “Saturday Night Live” right now. For instance, McCarthy flies around when her weapons backfire on her. Chris Hemsworth, playing male window dressing, picks up the phone and hangs up immediately. Also Chris Hemsworth is the real MVP of this film. If you’re happy to just go into this film expecting something fun, fluffy and ridiculous, then this will work for you. He’s the team’s receptionist and proves he does more than just swing a hammer and look hunky. He can be that kind of amusing.

Senior figures in the industry, however, have come forward to say that censorship was not the only reason for the film’s demise in the Chinese market.

Q: What about the stunts you do in the movie?

I can see where a lot of the criticism and hate would stem from for this film, and I appreciate that some people could be offended by parts of it too. Yeah. I should do that.

Probably the other aspect I enjoyed the most in the reboot was the fact that it took a few jabs at the aforementioned haters.
