China Manchester derby abandoned due to weather concerns

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has insisted that there is no reason as to why he wouldn’t shake hands with Jose Mourinho when they cross paths this week.

“We want to keep calm, play safe, go home and keep the preparation going next week”.

Guardiola had commented on their relationship: “We are polite guys”.

“Due to recent weather events, tournament organisers & participating clubs have chose to cancel tonight’s International Champions Cup game”, United said in a statement.

After a 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Friday, and now the hard weather conditions in Beijing, United’s trip to China has not been ideal preparation for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

“I think Beijing is unlucky because the pitch is very bad”, he said on Sunday.

With no game taking place today, United will head back home to Manchester on Monday as planned, while City will jet off to Shenzhen on Tuesday for Thursday’s game against Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United’s pre-season hasn’t quite gone to plan so far, and it looks as though Jose Mourinho is trying to stop any distractions from providing further bumps in the road.

“We didn’t see the pitch but the information we have is there could be a lot of rain in the last day so it’s not in good condition”, he said.

The pitch in the Bird’s Nest Stadium, built for the 2008 Olympic Games in the city, had been deemed unplayable as a result of days of heavy rain. We have six, seven or eight, which played in the Euros [and have not travelled to China].

“There’s things in life that you don’t control and, as we say in Manchester, we just get on with it”.

On the plus side, no Mourinho-Guardiola handshake, and no intense scrutiny of said handshake.

“It’s about getting your fitness work in and also getting to know the manager and the staff and the new players; it’s been a good bonding exercise, which has gone well”. Then we will see again the best Vincent Kompany. On Friday, the Red Devils suffered a huge defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the opening match of the International Champions Cup.
