In the past, with the mindset of “gold medals above all else”, all the nation’s sports resources and facilities were devoted to winning Olympic medals.

“People can not but ponder – what on earth is up with them?” it wrote.

Other successful USA athletes who might owe a decent amount of money on taxes stemming from Olympic medals won include gymnast Simone Biles (four golds, one bronze) and swimmer Katie Ledecky (four golds, one silver).

World No. 1 Ma Long, who emerged the fifth man to complete a Grand Slam after being crowned the singles champion in Rio, scored two points in Wednesday evening’s final.

Before the Games, forecaster Gracenote Sports predicted that Team GB would win 51 medals including 18 golds in Brazil.

England captain Steph Houghton told Press Association Sport she and her fellow Lionesses remain “very disappointed” to be absent from the Games, having played at London 2012.

The disappointments began swiftly in Rio.

Mo Farah overcame a late trip to reach the 5,000m final and keep his “double double” hopes alive and he was joined in qualification by Andy Butchart.

Sara Dosho came from behind to beat former Olympic champion Natalia Vorobieva of Russian Federation for the women’s 69kg gold, wrapping up a golden night for Japan.

Shields unexpectedly dominated the first Olympic women’s boxing tournament in London and won the gold medal. In badminton, China’s formidable mixed doubles pairs and second-ranked women’s doubles pair were eliminated.

Boss Sampson said: “There’s not many people on this planet who are Olympians, and this group of players did earn the right to go to an Olympics and compete, and represent themselves and their country and their family and friends, but it’s been taken away from them. That will be another challenge”.

Sampson said of the Olympics setback: “They’re always going to look back and think about what could have been”. China won seven out of eight men’s golds in Beijing eight years ago.

Reflecting this shift in expectations, a swimming bronze medallist has emerged as the biggest star of the Olympics in her homeland. As for the actual medals, the tax is based on the value of the materials: close to $600 for a gold, a little over $300 for silver, and bronze medals aren’t worth much at all, monetarily speaking.
