China on yellow alert for Typhoon Malakas
In Xiamen province, China, at least seven people had been reported dead on Friday afternoon, while another nine were missing, after heavy rain and wind from typhoon Meranti smashed windows, uprooted trees and destroyed an 800-year-old bridge.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said it has suspended all services on its Pingxi Line and Shen’ao Line Saturday, as well as services on its North Link Line and Yilan Line around the northeastern part of Taiwan until 6 p.m. that day.
Taiwan is bracing for another major storm, even as it is still reeling from Typhoon Meranti’s damage.
In Zhejiang, 70,000 people were evacuated and 1.8 billion yuan in direct economic losses recorded, Xinhua cited provincial authorities as saying.
The tropical storm will tear past Taiwanese capital Taipei at around midday and is forecast to reach as high as a category four hurricane, with wind speeds exceeding 125 miles per hour (200 kilometers per hour). Fix workers were working as of late Friday to restore electricity to millions of residents in the Fujian provincial capital of Xiamen, according to state media.
Typhoon Meranti swept through the Bashi Channel to the south of Taiwan on Wednesday, before making landfall in the coastal city of Xiamen on the Chinese mainland early Thursday morning. Gusts as strong as 160 kilometers per hour will track near the island’s coast.
