China rejects accusations in Japan defence report

“The Chinese court’s ruling is China’s way of saying that it has the right to continue to do what it wants in the South China Sea, despite the verdict from the worldwide court in favor of the Philippines”, Robert Kaplan, senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and author of “Asia’s Cauldron”, told Business Insider.

Swedish security company F-Secure, in a white paper released on Thursday, says it has detected malware deliberately targeting government organisations and private sector companies with a connection to the South China Sea dispute.

People who are caught illegally fishing in Chinese waters could face up to one year in jail, China’s top court said on Tuesday in an apparent attempt to enforce maritime sovereignty amid territorial tensions with neighbours.

The judicial explanation, based on Chinese law, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and judicial practices, further clarifies China’s maritime jurisdiction.

For decades, China and its neighbours have been arguing over the proper ownership of contested areas of the Sea, with tensions particularly high after the Hague’s global tribunal ruled against China in favour of Philippines in July 2016.

The Japanese defence report claimed that increased activity in the East China Sea had prompted Tokyo to scramble warplanes more than 570 times previous year.

Rather than confront China directly by sailing warships past its man-made island bases in the sea, Japan is providing equipment and training to the Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines and Vietnam, which are most opposed to China’s territorial ambitions.

“We will steadily strengthen ties with neighboring countries such as China and South Korea, and proceed with talks with Russian Federation for a peace treaty”, Abe told a news conference announcing his new cabinet.

“The ruling made by the tribunal has no legal basis”, Li said, noting that China’s Nansha Islands have been China’s territory since ancient times.

“The South China Sea has drawn huge attention, but some information online is not accurate”, said Zhang Haiwen, an official of the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) which launched the website.

Citing China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, Terehov calls attention to the fact that “at the China-ASEAN forum, 80 percent of the time was devoted to the economy and only a small percent to the situation in the South China Sea”.

In his viewpoint, the sea disputes will be causing more conflict of the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) between China and major powers; China will be able to push through with building marine nuclear plants; and, China will continue to hold military exercises over the disputed waters.

Warren said while the Poseidon had not gone within the 12-mile territorial limits that China claims around the artificial islands, future flights might do so. “For us, our priority is our fishermen”, he said. “So if they do that he law is much stronger on our side and the procedure is clearer in our favor”, he said since the arrest of Filipinos by China could be considered a provocative act.
