China’s Chen misses Rio 50m free after failing doping test

China is now facing its first doping scandal at the Rio Olympics after a Chinese swimmer allegedly failed the mandatory blood test taken before the Games.

The ruling puts Chen out of the medley relay and the 50m freestyle this morning, both events part of the curtain-closing session in the pool here in Rio tomorrow.

“I say this a lot, but every single day I’m living a dream come true”.

It said Chen has applied to the International Olympic Committee for a test of sample B and a hearing to look into the matter.

Chen tested positive for diuretic hydrochlorothiazide after coming in fourth in the women’s 100-meter butterfly, nine-hundredths of a second behind a spot on the podium.

While Xinyi is the first swimmer to test positive at the Olympics, swimming has been at the forefront of doping news since the games began. The substance is banned by the World Anti-doping Agency as it masks the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).

Later, Bulgarian television reported that Danekova had tested positive for EPO, although the 33-year-old quickly denied wrongdoing.

The 3,000m steeplechase athlete, who was due to run tonight, denied wrongdoing, saying: “I am not guilty, I have done nothing wrong”. Four tests were done, three of them were negative. She tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, CAS said.

In order to add accountability and transparency to the Rio Games, the International Olympic Committee has adopted a new step in its doping control process.

“We have noticed media reports about the case”.

Besides, US star gymnast Simone Biles took women’s all-around title without meeting any challenge.

The 33-year-old, who was due to compete in the women’s 3000m steeplechase on Monday, has been suspended after failing an out-of-competition test on August 1, the Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) has said. Last year, she was a second adrift that pace, then in the Rio 2016 final she finished fourth in 56.72.

“The athlete is declared ineligible to compete in and is excluded from the Olympic Games”, CAS said.
