The innovative and road-spanning 22 metre (72 feet) long Chinese bus undergoes first test run this week.

Hailed as the future of China’s public transit, the straddling bus will not only help decongest traffic but also reduce annual fuel consumption by 800 tons and cut carbon emissions by 2,500 tons. Here’s everything about it you need to know. The concept of a bus (or similar vehicle) that allows traffic to pass under it while in motion has been around a while, but it’s always been regarded as a pipe dream. A video of such a bus had been doing the rounds on the internet, but with its developers building into reality, everyone is wondering if the experiment may actually be the answer to urban transportation and traffic troubles. The TEBs are meant to link up to four compartments together, hauling an impressive 1,200 passengers at a time. The construction plans now include guardrails that separate the bus tracks from the vehicle lanes, and the TEB designers have confirmed that the bus will be able to round corners without issue.

Reports also suggest that the bus design has attracted interest from countries like India, Brazil, Indonesia and France. Part of the bus needs further assembling, a local newspaper quoted the projects’ chief engineer as saying.

The carrying capacity of the bus, as reported by various agencies, is anywhere between 1,200 and 1,400.
