China spoils soccer legend Abby Wambach’s farewell match at the Superdome
Superstar Abby Wambach retired from soccer this week, bringing her record-breaking career to a spectacular close. But China exacted its revenge by spoiling what was Wambach’s final match after announcing in October that she was ending a 14-year career. Tonight, she’ll make her final attempt.

Talking about the strong women she won the 2015 World Cup with, Abby could barely hold herself together. “I would definitely fire Jurgen [Klinsmann]”.
QUOTABLE: “The future is so bright. Basically, her teammates knew they could kick it up high and she’d go get it”.
Abby Wambach, the all-time leading goalscorer in U.S. women’s football, has called for Jurgen Klinsmann to be sacked as head coach of the men’s side.
China scored in the 58th minute, when forward Wang Shuang volleyed in a bounding cross from Wang Shanshan.
“I played 70 minutes and we don’t score a goal”, Wambach said.
The loss snapped an epic 104-match home unbeaten streak for the US Women, who had not dropped a match at home since November 6, 2004.
She referred to those players as “a bunch of these foreign guys”, specifically mentioning Jermaine Jones and Fabian Johnson, who were born in Germany and played there before committing to play for the U.S.
“She scored at crunch moments and led us to victories in many matches”. The game certainly had a celebratory tone, but it was about more than just the team. But if we had a team full of players like that it just wouldn’t feel the same as if we developed a team then that went on and won a World Cup. “Although he says he has, I don’t think that he has”, Wambach explained to Simmons. When the USWNT took the field before the match, she gave every member of her team a hug.
“I literally don’t want to be talked about as it pertains to being a soccer player”.

Wambach said her mind still processes the game as well as ever, but her body no longer keeps up. I’ve publicly and personally thanked her many, many times for her leadership, her experience, her spirit, all the incredible things both on and off the field that she has given to both this program and her teammates. There could come a day when Abby Wambach’s face needs to be chiseled off of that Mount Rushmore in favor of the Ronda Rousey or Serena Williams of USA soccer-and if that day comes, no one will be cheering harder than Wambach herself. “I’m all for it because I have opinions and I’m not afraid to say them”.
