It continued that her “erratic behaviour” influenced her political style and advised that she should take that into consideration, rather than “focus on long-term goals” for Taiwan.

It is a “minimum requirement” for any Taiwan leader, no matter which party he or she is from, to acknowledge the 1992 Consensus and its core implications that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China, said Li Yihu, head of the institute of Taiwan studies at Peking University, in a signed article published by Xinhua.

The 2005 picture of Julia Gillard which, with its empty fruit bowl, was used by critics to portray her as a single career woman bereft of personal connections.

The lengthy analysis of Tsai Ing-wen published Tuesday by Xinhua linked her single status to her political style and policies.

But while warning of the possible impact a lack of support for “one China” might have, the Taiwan Affairs Office does say investors from Taiwan who have interests on the mainland will have their rights and interests protected.

Of course, voters elected Tsai because of that very stance, having become wary of the close ties with Beijing developed by her predecessor and political opponents over the past eight years.

China and Taiwan have historically had strained relations: China considers Taiwan a renegade province, while Taiwan maintains that it is an independent country.

“When we deal with Tsai, we must always consider important factors such as her experience, personality and psychological traits”, Mr Wang wrote.
