China has unveiled design concept for a “straddling bus” which lets cars drive underneath, saving not only the road space but also help reduce air pollution, state media reported on Wednesday.
The concept and scale model was introduced at the 19th annual China Beijing International High-Tech Expo.
The Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) is a homegrown invention in which bus passengers would ride above, while traffic slips conveniently underneath. The hope is that the TEB will ease the insanely heavy traffic congestion, a problem that has gotten out of control in China. Its maker, Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co., Ltd, said TEB can carry as many as 1,400 passengers per trip, making it the world’s largest bus. The video says the train-like bus is cheaper and quicker to develop than subway systems and can hold up to 1,400 passengers. It will bestride two lanes on a road to be specially built for its use. The elevated bus will have passengers riding in comfort above the traffic, traveling at 37 miles per hour, with stops along the route similar to subway stations.
The Daily Mail UK in reporting on the scale model of the bus, said the first tests are scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.
But unlike complex underground subways, a TEB will cost one-fifth of the price and can be completed within one year, Bai said.
