Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif apprised President Rouhani of Indian brutalities in Kashmir, particularly in the past two months and stressed on the need for building unity and cohesion within the Muslim world.
“Let us be clear: talks are no favor to Pakistan”.
MJ Akbar, Minister of State for External Affairs addressed a press conference late Wednesday night after Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif raked up the Kashmir issues at the United Nations in NY.
While Sharif was delivering his speech, there was very thin attendance in the hall.
In response to Sharif’s remarks, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup later tweeted, “Pak PM Sharif at #UNGA in complete denial of Uri terror attack”. He said that Pakistan wants dialogue with India to resolve the Kashmir dispute, but categorically stated that dialogue is not a favor to Pakistan, but in the interest of both the countries.
He mentioned about the recent unrest in the Kashmir valley after the killing of Hizbul militant Burhan Wani.
Sharif has been highlighting rights violations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir over his NY visit.
In his wide ranging address, the prime minister also spoke about Pakistan’s commitment to eliminate terrorism, the Afghan peace process, the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, disarmament, but he kept his focus on the situation in Kashmir.
PM Nawaz Sharif said people of Kashmir had waited for 70 long years for implementation of Security Council’s own resolutions.
“The prime minister might strike a balance in his speech”.
Gambhir reminded the United Nations that the trail of the most “horrifying” and “dastardly terror attack” of 9/11 led all the way to Abbottabad in Pakistan, where Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had been hiding for years and was killed by U.S. forces.
He accused India of placing unacceptable conditions on any talks.
He further stated that the pre-conditions imposed by India on any dialogue “cannot work”.
Sharif, while on the topic of terrorism, said: “My country has been the principal victim of terrorism, including that supported, sponsored and financed from overseas”.
Congressman Elliot Engel, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the Uri terror attack along with the bombings in NY and New Jersey “demonstrate our need to continue to work together through our” counter-terrorism partnership to defeat terrorism. “We support Pakistan and we will speak for Pakistan at every forum”.
“Peace and normalisation between India and Pakistan can’t be achieved without discussion on Jammu and Kashmir”, Sharif was quick to add.
