A meeting between Modi and US President Barack Obama is, however, not on the cards during this trip, officials said.

At his luncheon banquet speech on Saturday, the Prime Minister spoke of the two partners “jointly facing emerging regional challenges, and to exploit new opportunities”.

Without directly naming Pakistan, Modi told Turnbull: “Our (India) neighbourhood, in particular, was suffering from destabilisation effects of terrorism”. “Because anything less than that is not enough”, he said.

“First engagement in Hangzhou is a meeting with the host”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc feed the fish at the residence of late President Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi on September 3, 2016. “Important mechanisms like financial stability board should stick to their core mandate”, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup quoted the Prime Minister as saying in a series of tweets.

In his meeting with BRICS leaders, Modi said “terrorists in South Asia or anywhere for that matter do not own banks or weapons factories and are funded”.

Prime Minister Nguyen, too, admitted that he mainly discussed “China and its aggressive foreign policy” with the Indian PM.

“Noting the Award issued on 12 July 2016 of the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under the Annex VII to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS), both sides reiterated their support for peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and over flight, and unimpeded commerce, based on the principles of global law, as reflected notably in the UNCLOS”, read the statement.

According to the PM’s website, the leaders held discussions about boosting bilateral ties. He will also hold bilateral meetings with his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull and Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. He called for greater collaboration in the area of cyber security and intelligence sharing. Modi’s visit to Hanoi was closely watched by experts and leaders in China. She also underlined the great importance the United Kingdom attached to the Indian diaspora in UK. He referred to the recent launch of the HSBC Corporate Rupee Bond on the London Stock Exchange. “This has made the White House quite grouchy”, it said.

Modi recalled Quang’s visit to India in 2013 as Minister for Public Security. “What G20 needs is an action-oriented agenda of collective, coordinated and targeted action”, PM Modi said.

“As two important countries in this region, we also feel it necessary to further our ties on regional and global issues of common concern”, said Modi, who is here on a day-long visit.
