Chinese cruise passenger rescued after 38 hours in sea

Media outlets are describing as “miraculous” the rescue of a Chinese woman found nearly two days after falling overboard from a cruise ship.

She reportedly fell from the fourth deck, the approximate height of a seven-floor building.

Ms Fan and her parents were on a return voyage to Shanghai after a five-day cruise to South Korea and Japan aboard a Royal Caribbean ship. She managed to keep herself afloat in the sea until she was found by a fishing boat on the morning of August 12, the report said. The paper said crew members reported that she was not injured, but was emotionally distressed by the ordeal.

Her parents, who were allegedly on the cruise with her, did not realise she was missing until hours later.

Fan looked quite well despite minor injuries sustained from jellyfish stings and blistered arms from sun exposure.

Some users took to micro-blogging site Sina Weibo to express their incredulity. She called for help but no one was around at such a late hour. “It’s a miracle”, the man said.

One commenter was more light-hearted, saying: “She should join the Olympics”. Luckily for Fan and her family, Fan is a good swimmer.

Local media attributed her survival to her “strong will” – but did not explain how she survived the low temperatures.

There is no information regarding the name of the cruise ship, or a description regarding how or where the woman went overboard. At 10 p.m. August 10, Fan’s father noticed that his daughter had not returned from the walk she had gone out for a few hours earlier.
