Bruno Sandilands said: “Definitely trolled her moment”.

Qin Kai, 30, who himself won a bronze medal in the synchronized diving event last week, immediately climbed onstage after Zi received her silver medal, getting down on one knee and presenting her with a red box containing a diamond ring.

Diver Qin Kai, 30, chose to propose to his girlfriend of 6 years in front of global audience and it worked.

Perhaps, for Zi, the engagement is more meaningful than winning the silver medal in her sport.

Indeed, Qin and his other partner Cao Yuan cost China the chance of a clean sweep of all eight diving golds when they lost out to British and American pair in the men’s 3m synchronised springboard. After all, interrupting your girlfriend of six years after she won an Olympic medal to propose on internationally-broadcast television turns the whole thing into a global-scale jumbotron public proposal rather than a celebration of her athletic achievements.

Qin had a lot to say during the well-prepared proposal, so much so that, according to Reuters, He had already forgotten most of it by the time it was over. “I didn’t know that he would propose today, and I didn’t expect that I would decide to marry so early”, an overwhelmed Zin said while wiping tears from her eyes. “I wasn’t expecting to get married so soon”, she said, adding that she noticed some unusual behavior by her boyfriend earlier in the day.

“He said a lot of things there at the podium”, Zi said.

Moments before Sunday’s proposal, He had been dueling teammate and world champion Shi Tingmao for the gold medal in the 3m springboard final.

Last Monday, Olympic rugby player Isadora Cerullo accepted an on-pitch proposal from Marjorie Enya, a volunteer manager at the Deodoro Stadium, following the women’s rugby sevens medal ceremony.
