As reported by Chinese newspaper People’s Daily, police were called to the scene upon hearing the cries coming from a toilet.

“The baby’s head was pointing downwards and her whole body had already fallen into the drain”.

A Beijing policeman rescued a newborn baby who was stuck face-down in a public toilet, reaching his arm down into the pipe to gently pull out the infant, police and reports said Tuesday.

“I could vaguely see the baby’s feet from the side”.

If there’s any good news to come out of this horrifying story it’s that the child was taken to a local hospital and does not appear to have suffered any injuries.

The baby’s mother later said she had hidden her pregnancy after being abandoned by the father and ended up giving birth in the lavatory.

Chinese state media say police are now trying to identify the baby girl’s parents.

The abandoned child is recovering in hospital after being found in a pipe in a public convenience in western Beijing.

Historically, a cultural preference for baby boys has meant that most abandoned children were girls.

In May 2013, a newborn baby in the eastern province of Zhejiang survived after being dropped down a toilet conduit by the mother. She later admitted to police she was the mother. Rescuers were forced to saw away a section of pipe with the boy inside, as indicated by Agence France-Presse.
