The first in three years high-level tripartite summit between Japan, South Korea and China began on Sunday in Seoul, local media reported. “We have full confidence in the cooperation with Japan and Korea and East Asia at large”.
On Saturday, a bilateral meeting with South Korean President and China’s Premier of the State Council was held.

“Japan, China and South Korea are neighbors, and because we are neighbors, there are hard issues among us”.
The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan held a demonstration in front of Japanese Embassy in Jongno-gu, central Seoul and demanded Japan apologize for its wartime atrocities.
In Saturday’s meeting, Li urged efforts to facilitate negotiations of the China-Japan-ROK trilateral free trade zone (FTZ) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to better link the region. Daniel, as you said, the three leaders issued a joint declaration following the summit outlining their commitment to peace and cooperation in Northeast Asia.
The big sit down comes on Monday with the South Korean president’s first summit with Abe. He said Japan would host a leaders’ summit next year.
Abe assessed that with the three-way summit, the trilateral cooperative system has normalized.
Abe may demand Park clarify Seoul’s position on the matter in the upcoming bilateral or trilateral session.
“China hopes the meeting will be an opportunity for the three countries to review the past and find a way out of their difficulties”, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said last week.
Park, who took office in early 2013, had until now repeatedly refused to meet Abe, saying Japan had yet to properly atone for its past actions. North Korea, of course, was a key part of the summit agenda. Pyongyang’s nuclear bomb and missile programs have long posed a serious security worry for Seoul and Tokyo.
“Li might try to sneak a comment past Park, like how China would sensibly and carefully handle the South China Sea issue as a matter of its sovereignty”, Kim said. They reaffirmed that they oppose any development of nuclear weapons on the Korean peninsula.
South Korea’s Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Yoon Sang Jick, Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Motoo Hayashi and China’s worldwide Trade Representative Zhong Shan met in Seoul, according to the Kyodo news agency.

Experts say that Abe’s relatively short two-day trip and 30-minute talks with Park ― which will not include a luncheon ― is indicative of the icy relationship between the two countries.
