If confirmed, Chen would be the first Chinese athlete to test positive at an Olympics since 1992.

Chen missed out on the podium in the 100-meter butterfly final on Sunday as she came fourth in 56.72 seconds, 0.09 behind bronze medalist Dana Vollmer of the United States.

The 18-year-old failed a test for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide and has asked the International Olympic Committee for a hearing to look into the matter.

The CSA said it has “demanded full cooperation from Chen in the investigation”.

Doping scandals overshadowed the build-up to Rio and, far from dying down as competition has got under way, have flared anew as U.S. and Australian competitors have branded their Russian and Chinese rivals as drug cheats. “We found out that my fourth test was positive”, Danekova told Bulgarian television. The women’s 20km race walk will also be decided while Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce starts the heats as she bids for a hat-trick of 100m sprint victories.

Sun was suspended for three months in 2014 but said he was taking angina medication that wasn’t previously on the WADA list of banned substances. Xinhua, the official state news agency, reported the story early Friday.

She is next scheduled compete in the 50-meter freestyle on Friday.

The association vows to cooperate with the Court of Arbitration of Sport during the investigation and will respect the final ruling.

Doping has become one of the hottest issues surrounding the Games, with voices coming out in support of legalising doping, but with athletes largely making a stand against it.

Some postings on the popular Sina Weibo microblogging site say they will wait for more details on the case before commenting, while others are directing their anger towards Australian swimmer Mr Horton.

Doping has cast a long shadow over swimming in the Rio Games.

“Go team China!” she said.

The 3,000m steeplechase athlete, who was due to run tonight, denied wrongdoing, saying: “I am not guilty, I have done nothing wrong”.
