Chip Kelly insists Blaine Gabbert doesn’t have ‘leg up’ on Colin Kaepernick
Coach Chip Kelly said Monday that Lewis tore his ACL on a scramble Sunday against Houston and will need season-ending surgery.

OK, it’s not like Kelly is choosing between Steve Young and Joe Montana in their primes. or even between a young, unburdened Kaepernick and a playoff-proven Alex Smith.
The San Francisco 49ers recently announced that backup quarterback and former Blue Devil Thad Lewis will miss the 2016 National Football League season after tearing his ACL in a preseason game against the Houston Texans over the weekend.
Kelly is showing every sign of giving Kaepernick every chance to take the job, regardless of who he, or anybody else in the organization or any outside observers, says is the favorite right now. But the 49ers may do everything they can to keep Kaepernick off the field during the coming season, so he stays healthy and they can cut ties easily next spring.
The Denver Broncos, in orange, will practice today and Thursday against the San Francisco 49ers, in white, at UCHealth Training Center. But there’s no way Kelly is happy with the way Gabbert threw the ball so the quarterback competition is still on. “It wouldn’t have been fair to put him in and then judge him on that in the competition”.
It’s all blurry with Kaepernick and 49ers management (Kelly at this point is probably just a bemused bystander), and it has been like this for months.
Gabbert hit on four of 10 passes for 63 yards in two series, including a 43-yard scoring pass to Vance McDonald.
For now, that’s all speculation – Kaepernick’s still a 49er, albeit one without an arm apparently allowing him to throw.
Update: Looks like Kaepernick may be out for some time, with what sources are calling “dead arm”, Adam Schefter reported on twitter.
He played in the 49ers preseason game on Sunday against the Houston Texans.
On a day when Kaepernick sat out, Gabbert, Lewis and Driskel all said they made throws they wished they could have back.
Texans: “Knowing my family and friends are in the stands really supporting me, that was a dream come true”, said Anderson, who grew up in nearby San Jose.
“He’ll get treatment tonight, and then we’ll take a look at him tomorrow and see how he’s feeling”, McAdoo said.
With so much uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position and Anquan Boldin now with the Detroit Lions, expect the San Francisco 49ers to feature Carlos Hyde and Mike Davis quite frequently.
49ers: First-round DL DeForest Buckner was pushed around a bit in the running game and finished with one solo tackle and two assists.
York/Baalke out-smarted themselves in the Denver negotiations-didn’t want to pay $5M but they’re now on hook for $12M… or $14M if Kaepernick is on the game roster all season as the back-up (or if he moves up to the starting role at some point).

Which might happen in a few days, or a week at the longest, because it has been mostly inevitable from the start.
