Chipotle probed for new outbreak of different E. coli strain
On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it has linked these five new cases in Kansas, Oklahoma and North Dakota to customers who ate at Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in Shawnee, Kansas, and Norman, Oklahoma, between November 14 and November 23.

“Because it is not known if these infections are related to the larger, previously reported outbreak, these illnesses are not being included in the case count for that outbreak, ” the CDC said.
The FDA said it is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local officials.
This comes just weeks after 53 people in nine states were sickened by a rare strain of the bacteria, with 48 of the 53 reporting they had eaten at a Chipotle in the week before their illness started. Chipotle was also recently hit with a norovirus outbreak at a restaurant in Boston that sickened more than 150 customers.
The CDC also said that out of 19 people that were reported ill with the E. coli infection, five of them were hospitalised and two of them developed a certain kind of kidney failure that is linked with a particular E. coli strain. Twenty people were hospitalized in that outbreak, according to previous accounts. It is imperative to state that post the outbreak the company had assured customers that it would tighten its food safety standards.
Most illnesses were reported from the western United States. Spokesman Chris Arnold said in an email Monday that the chain is in the process of implementing its new programs, which include increased testing of ingredients and training for workers.
“At this point, even rational and informed consumers could potentially be given reason to pause when choosing Chipotle over the plethora of fast casual competition in the marketplace”, Ivankoe told clients, cutting his price target on the stock to US$555 from US$630.
Health officials have still not found the cause of an E. coli outbreak at restaurants owned by Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.
Costco’s shares were up 0.7 percent at $160.51 in afternoon trading.
All microbial testing performed by Chipotle, including more than 2,500 samples of ingredients, restaurant surfaces and equipment, did not yield E. coli, the FDA said.
“While it is never possible to completely eliminate all risk, this program eliminates or mitigates risk to a level near zero, ” he said earlier this month.
