Chipotle targeted by sarcastic ‘Chubby Chipotle’ ads

A consumer rights advocate published a full-page advertisement on the New York Post as a visual attack against Mexican food chain Chipotle, igniting a spark on social media.

Chipotle isn’t taking the criticisms lying down. “This whole thing is a ridiculous smear campaign based on inaccurate representations of our positions and orchestrated by the Center for Consumer Freedom on behalf of its unknown supporters”, said Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold via email.

Furthermore, it made no mention of what else would have to be eaten for the 40 pound weight gain to take place, which essentially makes this claim invalid.

The CCF’s beef with Chipotle is the restaurant’s claim of being GMO-free, antibiotic-free and generally a healthier option than other casual restaurants.

Chipotle has come out against the Chubby Chipotle ads saying that they exists just to hurt the company’s image. However, the chain is also being sued by a woman in California who says Chipotle’s menu has “never been at any time free of GMOs”. And, Chipotle recently cited tight supplies for its decision to allow a new pork producer to use antibiotics to treat animal illness “only when necessary”. He added that Chipotle has been transparent about GMOs in beverages. According to the information from the chain’s website, most of the Chipotle burritos with a protein, rice, beans, cheese, and guacamole have about 1,000 calories, nearly half of the recommended daily calorie intake for an adult. And this is what the media campaigns should focus on, because this would actually have a target worth pursuing. But the lawsuit demonstrates just how willing Chipotle is to fudge its so-called “Food with Integrity” principles when it’s convenient.
