The 5th Wave is, like all studio movies starring actors in their late teens to early 20s seem to be these days, adapted from a bestselling YA trilogy, this time by Rick Yancey. We won’t spoil what the fifth wave is, but you can guess from those first four that it ain’t pretty.
The 5th Wave follows Cassie (Chloe Grace Moretz) as she tries to protect her brother after aliens attack the Earth. Sony Pictures hopes that “The 5th Wave” will be able to make its mark on cinemas when it premieres in 2016.
With famous dystopian movie franchises like “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” nearly ending, there’s bound to be space for another young adult film adaptation to take its place. It’s well-done and thrilling.
Moretz stars as Cassie Sullivan, a young woman who’s survived the four previous waves of deadly extra-terrestrial attacks that have left Earth a darkened, doomed place where the chamaeleonic alien Others pick off survivors. First, they emit an electromagnetic pulse blast to throw society into chaos, then they cause huge tidal waves to annihilate major coastal cities, spreading a plague that kills millions.

The film was directed by J Blakeson, working off a screenplay written by Susannah Grant, Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. The overwhelmingly white cast, led by Moretz, is rounded out by Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Maika Monroe (The Guest), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), Maria Bello (Prisoners) and Ron Livingston (Drinking Buddies), among others – each filling roles that fans may feel diverge from the source material a little. Are you looking forward to “The 5 Wave”?
