Marlene Pinnock, the African American homeless woman who was filmed being punched repeatedly by a California Highway Patrol officer a year ago, has been arrested again and taken to the Los Angeles County Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation.
Pinnock has long struggled with mental illness.
The officers made an assessment that Pinnock might be a danger to herself or to others, Nuñez said, and took her to a hospital for further evaluation. “On a daily basis, CHP officers encounter individuals experiencing mental health issues”, CHP said in a statement released Wednesday.
Pinnock was placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold, according to NBC Los Angeles.
As part of the $1.5-million settlement, Andrew agreed to resign his position as a CHP officer.
Pinnock’s beating was recorded with a cell phone camera by music producer David Diaz, who was driving along the freeway near La Brea Avenue and witnessed the altercation.
Pinnock’s arrest comes as the Los Angeles district attorney’s office is still deciding whether to charge Daniel Andrew in the July 1, 2014 incident. The CHP did not agree to wrongdoing, but rather noted the settlement would save taxpayers money from not going to trial. The clip, which was shot by shot by a passing motorist, instantly triggered a reaction after it was posted online.
“She was walking away from them”, Nuñez said.

Although the CHP initially said Andrew was trying to keep Pinnock from walking into traffic, it went on to state that she ignored his commands and became “physically combative”.
