Chris Powell: Clinton bets campaign on Trump’s bad character

This despite the worst week of his presidential campaign and perhaps the worst one-week performance by a presidential candidate in US history.

“The people of this country don’t want somebody that’s going to short-circuit”, Trump cracked in a swipe at Clinton’s recent remarks that she might have “short-circuited” when discussing the investigation into her private email server. What does it say about the electorate that so many Americans are supporting him? Earlier polls had the two candidates virtually tied.

And let’s not kid ourselves.

“For all of Donald Trump’s faults in dealing with the media – and they are legion – he has often made himself available”, wrote Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan last month.

Ultimately, what those disenfranchised voters will do on Election Day remains unknown, and what shows in polling now may be much different by November.

Donald Trump supporters lined up hours in advance for his rally on Saturday in Windham, New Hampshire.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll, released Friday, showed Clinton with a 4-point lead over Trump, excluding third-party candidates. So, with three months to go, Trump die-hards still can hold out hope. “The people in the background know it, the people who know her know it and she’s like an unbalanced person”.

“He’s not ruled by the establishment – he ran his primary campaign with his own money”, she explained.

Hillary Clinton appeared set to break a almost seven-month-long stretch without holding a press conference on Friday.

Trump’s latest barrage of attacks against Clinton – while not a departure from his brand of personal and aggressive attacks against his opponents – did mark an escalation in his attacks, just as Clinton and her allies are stepping up their attacks against Trump.

“This is a must-win state, even though we only have four electoral votes”, he said. It’s a classic swing state: President George W. Bush narrowly won the state in 2000, then lost it to a New Hampshire neighbor, Sen.

“We need unity. We have to win this election”, Trump told a rally in Ryan’s state of Wisconsin.

Trump concluded his remarks by rallying the crowd around his vision of near-constant “winning” in America under his presidency.

But critics have often pointed out that the administration has set a record for denying lawsuits related to public records requests under the Freedom of Information Act, and overseen controversial prosecutions of journalists under the Espionage Act, TechDirt reports. Those distractions were not on display Saturday night, as Trump ticked off a litany of attacks against his Democratic rival, oftentimes referencing notes on his podium as he moved between points. It worked for him in the nomination battle and he thinks it will work for him in the election.
