Chris Rock’s Oscar monologue was ‘tragic’ for America

Sunday night’s Oscars drew fewer TV viewers than last year’s telecast, but it turned in a Twitter record.

The 88th Annual Academy Awards were handed out live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California last night, and Chris Rock kicked off the festivities in a fashion that was both very amusing and thoughtful, smoothing the waters in just the right way.

“If you don’t want big money to control government, don’t vote for candidates that take money from big banks, oil or weirdo billionaires – stop”, said Adam McKay in his best adapted screenplay acceptance speech for “The Big Short”.

This is the wildest, craziest Oscars to ever host because of all this controversy. That was followed by the show’s pairing of Steve Carell and Tina Fey at 9:22 p.m. ET.

He went on to berate Will Smith who was not nominated for “Concussion”. Y’all be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now….I thought about quitting. “It’s like, ‘We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa”, he said.

The low estimates came despite the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio and other popular actors and anticipation about how host Chris Rock, who is black, would address the furor over an all-white line-up of acting nominees. “You often hear that Hollywood is out of touch with the rest of the country, so I made a decision to get out of Hollywood and talk to regular people about the movies”, he said.

“You got to figure that it happened in the 50s in the 60s, you know in the 60s one of those years Sidney didn’t put out a movie”. I get it. You get mad. I’m sure there were no black nominees some of those years.

He quipped: “Man, I counted at least fifteen black people on that montage”.

“When journalism is at its best, this is what it can illuminate for us”, McCarthy said. Alejandro González Iñárritu and Leonardo DiCaprio brought home best director and best actor, respectively, for “The Revenant”, while Brie Larson won best actress for “Room”.
