Chris Smalling understands frustration of Manchester United fans

Of his side’s performance, Bilic said: “United had their chances but we defended great as a team”.

Smalling said the players shared the fans’ pain and conceded those who paid good money to be in the stands at Old Trafford were entitled to air their frustrations.

“We [the players] are just as frustrated”, Smalling told MUTV.

A fourth 0-0 draw in six games in front of their own fans, and a fifth in nine in all competitions, saw the Red Devils booed off at full time as they missed the chance to go to the top of the table.

“The fans were very happy and that’s why we have to play like this, and we just have to improve at home as well”.

“If we keep creating chances, we’re confident sooner rather than later they’ll go in”.

Slaven Bilic was not too disheartened at his team’s failure to register their first win at Old Trafford since 2007.

I think we deserved at half time to be 1-0 up.

The only disappointment for Bilic was that referee Mark Clattenburg failed to send Schweinsteiger off for what the Croatian deemed to be an elbow on the exceptional Winston Reid. It’s a hamstring – he felt it and we had to take him off.

Andy Carroll is set to start for West Ham after Diafra Sakho was ruled out for around two months with a thigh injury sustained against West Brom last Sunday.

“Paddy McNair has an ankle problem and Schneiderlin is a little bit stiff in the hip, so we have to wait and see as always on that”, Van Gaal said. “As it was done without those players, it makes it even bigger”.
