Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton teamed up for an epic performance at Wednesday night’s CMA Awards.
Veteran co-hosts Carrie Underwood and Paisley led the night with their usual shtick (eight times they’ve done this now!), which meant Hillary Clinton jokes, a dig at the newly divorced (and newly rebounding) Blake Shelton, and…
Here’s a look at Mr. SexyBack’s memorable performance and other moments that dominated at the Bridgestone Arena, which included Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton and Little Big Town, who won two awards thanks to the hit, “Girl Crush”.
Stapleton bagged all the awards he’s nominated for, including Male Vocalist, New Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, reported Ace Showbiz. Stapleton and Timberlake performed “Tennessee Whiskey” which left the audience and crowd awestruck.
It was Lambert’s sixth consecutive win in the category. He added, “I think we in this room know Stapleton…I think a select group of people that really, really, really seek out music…have heard Stapleton through the years. It’s a short answer, but it’s a real one”, Stapleton said.
The audience laughed, as did Shelton. While it would have been nice to see the fresh faces of Ballerini and Hunt onstage to accept an award, and while they absolutely deserved their nominations, they were both “dark horses”, so to speak.
Paisley and Underwood avoided mentioning Lambert by name, but it was officially confirmed early on Wednesday Shelton had moved on to his “Voice” co-star Gwen Stefani, Fox News reported. “I’m not going to take it lightly”, said Stapleton.
Pentatonix: What is an a cappella group doing at a country music awards show, you ask? During his speech he thanked everyone from his label to his fans, including a special thank you to his wife Caroline for letting him “go out on the road so many times and do what I love for the people that I love – our fans, our friends, our family”.
That was followed by a pair of duets: Eric Church and Hank Williams Jr performed “Are You Ready for the Country” and John Mellencamp and Urban strummed their guitars during “Pink Houses”.
Let’s do better, CMAs and country radio.
