Christian McCaffrey breaks Rose Bowl record for all-purpose yards
Despite the record, Iowa flew under the radar all season due to the perception of a weak schedule.

There are estimates that there could be more than 40,000 Iowa fans in the stands at today’s 4:10 p.m. game against Stanford. Both teams narrowly missing the College Football Playoff and now will fight for the ultimate consolation prize: a Rose Bowl title.

The rout was really on after McCaffrey’s 63-yard TD return in the opening minute of the second, and Stanford comfortably sat on its 35-point halftime lead while improving to 7-7-1 in the Rose Bowl in school history. Not only is the traditional conference pairing back, you’ve got two similar smash-mouth teams that love to run the ball and control the clock.
After coming up just short in the Big Ten Championship, will Iowa give Stanford a game when the two teams clash in the New Year’s Day Rose Bowl at 5:00PM ET?
“They’re probably more like us than a lot of other teams we’ve played”, Cardinal defensive coordinator Lance Anderson said.
McCaffrey, who went on to set an NCAA single-season record with 3,496 all-purpose yards and finish second in Heisman Trophy voting, rushed for 66 yards.
The 102nd edition of the Granddaddy of Them All matches the two schools that barely missed out on the College Football Playoff.
Iowa’s defense deploys a keep-it-simple-stupid approach, with great effectiveness: The Hawkeyes are one of the stingiest teams in the country. “But it’s still a game”. On the ground, the Iowa Hawkeyes average 192 yards per game in which Jordan Canzeri tops with 976 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Cardinal have the edge on offense and they have a chance to display it on a national stage, so there is no reason to hold back.
First of all, this is a must-watch game and if you don’t tune in for at least part of it, you better have a good excuse. He backed that performance up with five tackles in Stanford’s 41-22 win over USC in the Pac-12 championship game. Hogan is grateful for his place in history, but he is only interested in ending his career by joining the list of two-time Rose Bowl champions.
“It’s not just about stopping (McCaffrey)”, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said.
ADVANTAGE IOWA?: Stanford’s relatively modest fan base could have Rose Bowl fatigue, but Iowa appears ready to fill any gap.
Iowa was the last team to be blanked in the Rose Bowl, losing 28-0 to Washington in 1982.
McCaffrey set a Football Bowl Subdivision record with 3,496 all-purpose yards, breaking the previous record of 3,249 set by Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State in 1988.
While this is Ukropina’s third Rose Bowl with Stanford, it’s his first as the starter.
For the Cardinal, this will be their third appearance since the turn of the decade; Stanford beat Wisconsin 20-14 in 2013, but lost to Michigan State 20-24 in 2014.
“We’ve been here a couple of times before, but I still have that same mindest of nearly being a little kid on Christmas morning”, Hogan says. “I think the guy’s have done a good job dealing with it. I want them to enjoy it. This is something they’ve earned”. It doesn’t get stale.

“As we walked up the stairs, just to see a full sea of black and gold, it was just an unreal scene”, Mark Ryan of Waterloo said. A veteran quarterback (Stanford’s Kevin Hogan) and seasoned offensive line (Iowa, led by All-America center Austin Blythe) will make for an entertaining game. “So it’s pretty wonderful to see how many people came to support them”, Ashley said.
