Businessman Donald Trump has picked up support since the GOP presidential debate earlier this month, surging to a double-digit lead on the Republican field and emerging as the most-trusted candidate on issues ranging from the economy to immigration.

Walker, of course, is in Iowa today, a state he has to win, or come very close to winning, if he has a path to the nomination. Rick Santorum, prepared to unveil his immigration proposals later this week, it raises the question of whether Trump’s ascent risks turning the Republican primary into a competition over who can be toughest on immigrants. But, editors warn, it has the potential to cost the GOP the election.

Mr Trump’s political gravity-defying popularity has stunned Republican party grandees.

The Republican frontrunner wants ICE officers to work with local police departments across the country targeting gangs in order to find undocumented immigrants.

“There is not a realistic way of rounding up and deporting 12 or 13 million people“, Mr. Rubio told reporters at the Iowa State Fair on Tuesday. Kasich said he would “make sure we don’t have anybody – any of the criminal element here”.

These numbers follow Trump’s recent release of his plan to tackle undocumented immigration.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson is third, with nine per cent, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida are tied at fourth with eight per cent, and Kentucky’s Senator Rand Paul is in sixth place with six per cent. He is slated to roll out his immigration policies during a speech Thursday in Washington.

A new CNN ORC poll finds Trump with the support of 24% of Republican registered voters. His nearest competitor Jeb Bush stands 11 points behind at 13
