Among the most consistent elements of Christie’s gubernatorial reign has been his environmental insensitivity and focus on supporting Big Fossil Fuels.

Christie also vetoed a bill that would have banned people from possessing guns if they had been convicted of carjacking, gang criminality, racketeering or terroristic threats.

The Republican governor’s office avoided specific mention of the smoking bill but blamed the Legislature for hastily sending him more than 100 bills, “praying for them to be rubber stamped”.

Despite the fact that the bill received bipartisan support in New Jersey’s state legislature and was considered uncontroversial, Christie’s failure to act on the measure before a designated deadline killed the bill.

The bill’s language allowed for the recess to be held indoors or outdoors, though it expressed a “preference” for outdoor play, “if feasible”. Democratic lawmakers who sponsored that law said it had the unintended effect of stalling the technology’s development, as gun-rights groups lobbied against it.

This effort to force the adoption and use of “smart guns” by mandating that firearms dealers stock them in inventory suggests that politicians will once again pursue a ban on traditional firearms in the future.

The bill had been passed unanimously by the Legislature, 68-0 in the Assembly and 35-0 in the Senate. When she’s not working with one of the three non-profit organizations she heads- New Jersey Heroes, the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, and the Drumthwacket Foundation- she’s on the presidential campaign trail with her husband Governor Chris Christie.

According to Blumenfeld, smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in this country, so policy-makers who are in a position to make sure people don’t have access to these products should take that action.

In a 2013 survey, the School Boards Association found 12.5 percent of respondents said their districts don’t provide daily recess in grades K-to-5, while 75 percent said they did.
