Trump initially refused to rule out an independent run should he fail to win the Republican nomination.

In another recent poll, one that holds perhaps even worse news for Donald Trump, conducted by The Washington Post and ABC News, voters were asked which candidate was “qualified to serve as president”.

July 19, 2016: the day the Republican National Convention became a Kangaroo Court.

West Virginia convention delegates show their support for Trump.

The crowd at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland enthusiastically chanted, “Lock her up!” as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie performed a call-and-response indictment.

A former secretary of state under Obama, Clinton, 68, was due to be formally nominated at the Democratic National Convention next week in Philadelphia.

Instead, Clinton attacked Trump in front of the union crowds on several fronts relevant to the crowds like unpaid bills and foreign-made products.

With three of Trump s other children at his side, the son said: “It is my honor to be able to throw Donald Trump over the top in the delegate count tonight”. But Trump’s campaign and GOP officials eager for a show of unity behind Trump worked to head that off.

“This year of surprises and dramatic turns can end in the finest possible ways when America elects a conservative governing majority”, Ryan said. Christie’s aggressive fundraising and nationwide campaigning helped Republicans capture and keep a number of states in 2014 – including battleground races in Illinois, Wisconsin and Florida. Mrs. Trump’s speech was well received in the convention hall. He led efforts to successfully tamp down a rebellion on the convention floor Monday, though the campaign still had to contend with angry outbursts from anti-Trump delegates.

Trump’s vice presidential running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, urged the party to put divisions behind it after the primary season, in which Trump beat 16 rivals for the nomination.

As CBS2’s Marcia Kramer reported, Trump Jr. cast the votes for the NY delegation that put his father over the top. Four of his children joined the state’s delegation on the convention floor for the historic moment and appeared overwhelmed with emotion.

For her part, Tiffany Trump called her father a “natural-born encourager”.

That followed a day in which Republicans scrambled to defend Melania Trump’s primetime address against charges of plagiarism. She spoke of her husband’s “simple goodness” and his loyalty and love of family – while noting the “drama” that comes with Trump in politics. Two passages – each 30 words or longer – matched a 2008 Democratic convention address by Michelle Obama almost word-for-word. But the rocky start raises fresh questions about his oversight of his campaign, which gives voters a window into how a candidate might handle the pressures of the presidency. ‘The Wizard of Oz, ‘ ” Clinton said. “But when you pull back the curtain, it was just Donald Trump with nothing to offer to the American people”.

This week’s Republican convention provides another opportunity for party leaders to publicly embrace Trump’s campaign.

The Senate GOP leader’s main argument was essentially that while President Obama vetoed Republican priorities like repealing health care reform and cutting spending, Trump would approve their legislation. First, it was a partisan political speech delivered by Chris Christie, who is a world class political communicator.
