Christie to Indiana, Heidi Cruz to New Jersey

Sen. Ted Cruz says a vote for Donald Trump is a vote for Hillary Clinton, in an interview Wednesday morning on WPHT-AM’s Chris Stigall show.

The projection was in an internal campaign memo sent to Trump surrogates Tuesday night, after Trump secured a convincing win in the NY primary.

Clinton, now 81 percent of the way toward clinching the Democratic nomination that eluded her eight years ago, can lose every remaining contest and still prevail. Her sweeping victory in the NY primary called into question the durability of Bernie Sanders’ rival campaign and left him with severely limited options for overtaking her.

Trump now has 845 delegates, followed by Cruz with 559 and Kasich with 147, according to The Associated Press.

Heidi Cruz’s visit to New Jersey is a signals the importance of the June 7 New Jersey primary, said campaign supporter Rich Pezzullo.

Trump basked in the glow of his victory at a rally in Indianapolis, where he drew several thousand people to a packed building at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. “We’re gonna take them, ” Cruz predicted.

Trump said, “There will be retaliation unless it’s fair”. The Hoosier State, which votes on May 3, offers 57 delegates. Like in NY, it employs a hybrid system that awards those delegates on both winner-take-all basis statewide and by congressional district. With trademark sarcasm, he played down Trump’s win, saying the mogul hoped to convince people that “Pennsylvania is a suburb of Manhattan”.

“Donald, with a characteristic display of humility, declared this race is over”, Cruz said.

“What is clear today is that we are headed toward a contested convention”.

Republican National Committee members gathered in Florida this week as the focus on the party’s nominating convention intensifies. Party chairman Reince Priebus has discouraged such action this week. The Vermont Senator remains tenacious, though, and has already moved on to Pennsylvania. Clinton holds a significant lead among women (61% to 32%), while Sanders leads among men (50% to 41%).

On the Republican side, many party leaders are torn.

“After her win in NY this week, these numbers in nearby Pennsylvania suggest that the entire northeast is looking pretty good for the Clinton campaign”, said Patrick Murray, the director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

Cruz, the most stridently pro-Israel candidate among the Republicans, campaigned hard among the Orthodox, including going to matzah bakery last week.
