Christmas storm woes continue as tornado, flooding hit Alabama

A tornado was reported to have gone through the suburb east of Dallas, damaging several homes.

Scores of people were injured in the region and more than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed, officials said.
Weather officials also confirmed tornadoes hitting the towns of Ovilla, Farmersville and Rowlett.
Parts of 11 states in the middle of the country are under a winter storm warning as the weather system that spawned tornadoes in Texas and flooding in Missouri moves on.
Ellis County Emergency Management Coordinator Stephanie Parker said homes had been destroyed in the storms and warned people to stay off the roads.
“‘We know there were two possible tornadoes, but we will not for sure until we look at the damage, ‘ said Jason Holmes, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service office in Chilton County”.
Tornadoes typically hit the region the hardest in the spring, but such storms can happen any time of the year. Work to connect those customers, including Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, was completed Saturday night.
“We’re dealing with darkness out here”, Hatfield said.
Six people were killed in Tennessee and one in Arkansas.
About 600 structures were damaged, the majority of which were single-family homes. But many they said they were thankful to see another Christmas. Another home had a partially torn roof, while another was damaged so badly that only one exterior wall survived the tornado. His house only had minor damage, but was next to that were flattened. “I said ‘OK this could be it boys'”. No other details of damage were immediately available.
In far West Texas, up to four inches of snow fell overnight in the Alpine area, with foot-deep drifts reported.
New Mexico State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo said Sunday night that the stretch of interstate from Albuquerque to the Texas border would be closed through at least Monday afternoon.
In Texas, meanwhile, residents hunkered down for what the National Weather Service was calling a “historic blizzard”.
“National Weather Service crews will assess damage Saturday morning in southwest Birmingham and east Tuscaloosa, locations where tornadoes possibly touched down Christmas Day as storms roared through the state”.
On Saturday (local time) two deaths were reported in MS from two people who had been missing since Wednesday.
Among the dead were seven people from MS, including a 7-year-old boy who perished while riding in a auto that was swept up and tossed by storm winds.
The family’s vehicle was overcome with flood water and ended up in a ditch near Tyler’s Pinson home. He said the levees are expected to hold against the influx of water.

The twister left a two square-mile swath of destruction as heavy rains and flooding continued to hammer the state, which along with much of the rest of the southeastern USA, has seen heavy downpours since Wednesday.
