On Sunday afternoon, transportation officials had closed dozens of flooded roads in one section of the state, while in another they were racing to treat highways and bridges with salt and sand.
In southern IL, authorities said three adults and two children drowned Saturday evening when the vehicle they were riding in was swept away and sank in a rain-swollen creek.
As strong Tornadoes swept through Dallas, at least 11 people have been reported dead.
Police said the deaths in Garland happened during tornado-related traffic accidents near Interstate 30 and the George Bush Turnpike, the Dallas Morning News reported, saying some of the bodies were found in cars while others were catapulted from the scene.
A storm on Christmas Day in 2012 which included several tornadoes damaged homes from Texas to Alabama.
And that’s exactly what hit the Dallas metropolitan area, the country’s fourth most populated area with over 7 million residents.
An ice storm warning was posted for parts of western Oklahoma, where “numerous power outages will be likely”, according to the National Weather Service.
The Texas tornadoes followed days of tumultuous weather in the Southeast including unusual winter tornadoes that left 18 people dead there over the Christmas holiday period.
As severe weather continues across the State of Texas, Governor Abbott declared a state of disaster in the following Texas Counties: Collin, Dallas, Ellis and Rockwall Counties. All in all, the results of this monstrous storm system are blizzards, flash flooding and otherwise life-threatening weather conditions.
“Sadly, there have been multiple fatalities from this event, and our prayers are for comfort for their families”, said Sherry Bristow Watts, assistant director for Texas Adventist Community Services.
A state of emergency has been declared in the states of Missouri and New Mexico.
“American and its employees stand ready to assist in the recovery efforts and we encourage our customers to join us by donating to the Red Cross”, said Joe Taney, American’s vice president for Dallas-Fort Worth Hub Operations.
“By Sunday morning, the snow, sleet and freezing rain will expand northeast across the southern Plains”, the National Weather Service said.
Counties statewide are reporting flooding from heavy rains.
Collin County Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Moody said the tornado destroyed four to six homes and a store in Copeville and others in Blue Ridge, with a trail of significant damage that basically followed the route of State Highway 78 in rural eastern Collin.
“Travel will be risky and impossible across much of the east”, it said.
“We’re dealing with darkness out here”, Hatfield said.
