Chrome’s Notification Center goes away but notifications will stay

“We’ve come to understand that our yellow “caution triangle” badge can be confusing compared to the HTTP page icon”.

So “to keep Chrome simple”, Google is removing it from Windows, Mac, and Linux in the upcoming release. It said it has made the change to use only three security states because it gives a better visual indication of the page security relative to HTTP while making the different states more accessible to users. “Until recently, Chrome marked this security state with a yellow “caution triangle” badge on the page security icon in the URL bar”.

“Sometimes, Web sites try to use HTTPS to be secure and get it mostly right, but they have minor errors”, according to Lucas Garron and Chris Palmer of Chrome’s security team.

Mixed-content errors often appear on Web sites that are fully encrypted but might also contain elements that are not encrypted. Only a handful of ad networks provide an encrypted service (though Google itself does), despite the security benefit it offers, such as preventing man-in-the-middle attacks.

A few years ago Google added a notification center to its Chrome browser for desktop and laptop computers. It plans to reduce the icon down to just two states, secure or insecure, in a future update, presumably by eliminating the green padlock and displaying red warnings on insecure sites.

Garron and Palmer said the company’s goal is for two eventual states: secure, and not secure.

Since then, the company has reworked its approach to desktop (and mobile) Chrome notifications by adopting what it described last spring as “the new emerging web standard for push notifications”.

Google has announced the ability to receive notifications through its Chrome browser is about to disappear. Google says the notification center on ChromeOS will remain unchanged.
