Chromecast Audio gets hi-res audio and synchronized multi-room streaming

The Chromecast Audio works with Android and iOS and speakers with 3.5mm, RCA, or Optical Audio.

Google normally charges $35 for a Chromecast Audio, but the company is now running a holiday promotion allowing you to pick up 2 for $55. This means that users with multiple Chromecast Audio devices can now stream to control multiple groups of speakers at once, or independently, all using the same intuitive Chromecast app. The resolution suffers when audio files are compressed, and there are many who find that unacceptable.

Apart from hi-res audio, the Chromecast Audio now offers a multi-room feature, so you can fill every room, or wherever you have a Chromecast Audio connected, with synchronous tunes. Chromecast may not be able to compete with a traditional home audio setup, but it also only costs $25.

With hi-res audio, Google is hoping to deliver 96KHz/24bit lossless audio playback, which is technically “higher-than-CD-quality” sound that can be played through your currently-owned speakers.

Google just announced an update for the device giving it multi-room support. Not bad for all the stuff it can do now, and with confidence that Google will keep improving the device down the line we’d say it’s not a bad pickup if you aren’t interested in a more expensive (and complicated) tool. It is much easier than traditional Bluetooth pairing, because you can simply tap the Cast button from within music apps if both devices are on the same network.

The update should happen in the background, but you’ll need to grab the latest Chromecast app to start playing.
