Church minister Lee Banfield is first to leave Great British Bake Off
It’s the debate that’s kept Great British Bake Off fans very busy since the first episode aired – namely, should you dunk your Jaffa Cakes or shouldn’t you?

Now the experts are weighing in on the issue, jokily called ‘Jaffer Gate, ‘ with McVitie’s Brand Director Kerry Owens saying: “Only Brits could be so passionate about this issue, and they have spoken – Jaffa Cakes are not for dunking!”
She added: ‘However, Paul is the nation’s expert of all things baking so maybe we’ll see him starting a new trend’.
After setting contestants a technical challenge to make 12 identical jaffa cakes, Paul and Mary tucked into a plate of perfectly created biscuits as they discussed the correct way to make the sweet treats.
Following his departure, Banfield said the worst moment in the competition was when Hollywood said “that isn’t a Jaffa Cake” when judging his technical bake.
Its research revealed 72 per cent of us have never dunked a Jaffa Cake.
The answer, confirmed by HMRC (for tax purposes) is that Jaffa cakes are definitely cakes – not biscuits.
Many viewers seemed to agree with Mary, with one writing: “Paul Hollywood dunks his Jaffa Cakes in tea”.
Paul, 50, had viewers in uproar on Wednesday night and fellow judge Mary Berry, 81, told the Merseysider: “We don’t do that in the South”.
Would you dunk jaffa cakes into your cup of tea? Jaffa Cakes are not for dunking. Some of us do dunk Jaffa Cakes in our tea.
Last year’s baking champion, Nadiya Hussain, continued her popularity streak as she debuted the first episode of her new TV show, The Chronicles Of Nadiya, on BBC One immediately after Bake Off.
During the first episode, the amateur bakers were asked to create drizzle cakes for the signature bake and Jaffa Cakes in the technical challenge, before constructing a ideal genoise sponge with a mirror glaze for their final bakes, known as the Showstopper.

The bake that sealed Banfield’s fate was his Showstopper cake, which was a strawberry surprise mirror cake covered in a dark chocolate mirror glaze, complete with ganache and layers of fresh strawberries and strawberry jam.
