Cincinnati Zoo deletes Twitter accounts over Harambe memes

A zoo in the USA where a gorilla was killed earlier this year has deleted its Twitter account after constant online trolls about the animal’s death, the media reported.

Harambe’s death was widely mourned and the gorilla was the subject of a plethora of Internet memes, signs, petitions and hashtags like #justiceforharambe.

In May, the story of Harambe sparked national attention after the 400-pound Western Lowland Gorilla was shot and killed by zoo officials in order to protect a three-year-old boy who had fallen into the gorilla exhibit.

The incident sparked worldwide outrage and has since then been subject to controversy, prompting angry tweets and petitions.

Maynard’s Twitter account was hacked over the weekend with, what else, Harambe memes.

Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard said they’re not amused by any of it.

In what seems to be an exasperated move, the zoo deleted its Twitter account, owing to the trolling it has continuously been receiving.

The reproduction of the story/photograph in any form will be liable for legal action. “Our zoo family is still healing, and the constant mention of Harambe makes moving forward more hard for us. We are honoring Harambe by redoubling our gorilla conservation efforts and encouraging others to join us”.

The zoo still has social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook.

All of these propositions are not only insensitive, but they are also highly offensive, Maynard said.
