Cities Hold Vigils, Memorials and Protests After Shootings Last Week
Sterling was killed outside a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, convenience store, an event caught on video by at least two bystanders.

Five police officers were killed after a sniper opened fire Thursday night in Dallas during a protest against the killings of black men last week by police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota.
While numerous demonstrations nationwide remained peaceful, scuffles broke out overnight Saturday in St. Paul, Minnesota, where protesters clashed with police on Interstate 94.
Police said 21 officers were injured when people threw rocks and other projectiles, including a 25-pound block of concrete that struck an officer’s head from above, breaking a vertebrae. Police were called. Cell phone videos captured two officers wrestling Sterling to the ground and shooting him.
Then Strickland said he remained “hopeful” that his city’s peaceful protests Sunday would signal a willingness of Black Lives Matter activists and police to hold a “respectful” dialog. About 100 people were arrested – half during the highway standoff and the other half early Sunday in another part of St. Paul.
Another 52 people were arrested off the highway at about 4 a.m., and face public nuisance and unlawful assembly charges.
The killing of Castile outside St. Paul and another black man in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, touched off protests.
The activist was walking along a major roadway and live-streamed his arrest for obstruction on Saturday on Periscope. Dallas Police Chief David Brown said he wanted to kill white cops – and that he’d been plotting larger attacks.
Valerie Castile, the mother of Philando Castile, released a statement Sunday in response to the protests that have taken place following the deadly officer-involved shooting.
The uncle of a man fatally shot by an off-duty St. Louis County police officer said his nephew had been arguing with the officer on Facebook about Black Lives Matter. She said that officers outside the police station said they don’t have a problem as long as protesters don’t cross barricades or stop traffic – but that in practice it’s different.
The protest quickly grew into the day’s biggest and most disruptive demonstration in the Twin Cities, following a peaceful daylong gathering at the governor’s residence and a separate rally at Loring Park that spilled into the streets of downtown Minneapolis, where protesters briefly stopped traffic at 9th Street and Hennepin Avenue, blocked an entrance at the Basilica Block Party and marched past Target Center.
People turned out in large numbers throughout the country to demonstrate against police use of force and remember the five fallen officers. “This is just something that doesn’t happen in St. Paul”. “If we take this time to see that this is a human issue and speak out together, we can greatly decrease fear and create change”, Moore said. “I’ve asked him to apply for the job and I think last night we saw why I asked him to do that”. He said he was trying to move the crowd along and keep the peace.

The ongoing investigation is being overseen by the Saint Antony Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Crime Apprehension. He had no criminal record in Texas and no apparent links to the Black Lives Matter movement despite the fact that he was black. He said in his statement on Friday that “the atmosphere in the police department right now is somber and also their hearts are heavy following the recent unfortunate happenings”. He was killed by using a remote controlled bomb robot, to avoid risking officer’s lives.
