Honey, I shrunk the beach buggy……

Citroen has taken the wraps off the new E-MEHARI.

However, try not to get too excited because there is an issue in regards to the 2016 Citroen e-Mehari release, as the French carmaker has said this model is not going to be released in the UK.

Exterior of the two-door cabriolet consists of signature dual headlights, a smiling fascia and a ribbed door pattern from the original Méhari. The rear bench can also be folded away for extra storage space. Apart from that, the E-Mehari features black wing extenders, lower valance and a black front bumper.

The body of the e-Mehari is made from thermoformed plastic and will be available in a range of radical colours – including different paint schemes for the roof.

Citroen didn’t have much to say about the interior but customers can order beige or orange-red upholstery. Additionally, the interior is fully waterproof, something any beachgoer will appreciate.

History lesson out of the way, Citroen has surprised everyone by bringing back the Méhari as an obscure electric vehicle built in the same spirit (see video above for proof). Recharging the batteries requires a total of eight hours on a 16A socket and 13 hours on a European 10A domestic socket.

The E-Mehari is supermini small, at 3810mm long, 1650mm tall and 1870mm wide.

Inside, things are a bit closer to the concept vehicle.

Production is expected to begin in spring next year, at PSA Peugeot-Citroën’s plant in France.

If an E-Mehari were to make it to our shores, we think it’d be a flawless fit for places like Catalina Island, Maui, or Puerto Rico, but don’t expect it to come to the U.S. Citroen likely won’t reenter the American market in the near future, and if it does, it would probably be with mainstream crossovers and sedans, not a niche beach cruiser.
