CJ E&M paves way to export K-dramas

This will lead to the development and production of two originals within the next three years, and discussions on how existing films and television dramas can be remade.

31 that its drama production subsidiary Studio Dragon has signed a partnership with global video platform DramaFever to produce South Korean dramas.

At his keynote address in the Broadcast Worldwide (BCWW) convention held at COEX in Seoul on the same day, Craig Hunegs, president of business and strategy at Warner Bros Television Group President, said, “Korean contents carry much weight with the global market”.

It’s not the first partnership between DramaFever and CJ E&M.

The production arm was launched by CJ E&M in May as a way to improve its global competitiveness, with the company also working with OTT services around the world to explore demand for Korean dramas. In July 2015, DramaFever signed a licensing deal with CJ E&M that included the exclusive distribution rights for eight Korean TV dramas and at least 10 feature films.

“Studio Dragon is determined to become Asia’s No. 1 drama studio, and in order to reach the goal, we plan to work with industry leaders home and overseas to provide unrivaled content for audience”. “We are going to strengthen competitive edge in our contents such as planning ability, story and others as an expert drama studio and we are going to continuously make new contents with foreign partners”.

Having been recognized in 2010 by the Korean Creative Content Agency and Korea’s ministry of Culture, DramaFever was acquired by Warner from Japan’s SoftBank in February.
